Sankhu is an
important town in the Katmandu valley. It lies about 17 km. northeast of thecapital. Sankhu is also known as Shankharapur.Sankhu is an old town of newar
community. Almost all people in Sankhu are newari, even today. Sankhu ('sakwo'
called
by the locals) was established
in the kaligat era 1801. According to the ancient book (Bansabali), Sankhu was
made inthe shape of a holy right conch-sell under the direction of Jog Dev
Bajracharya, (a priest), who pious permission to do sofrom Goddess Bajrayogini.
There are altogether 8 toles(Community area) in sankhu. They are IPA TOLE, INLA
TOLE,PUKHULACHHI TOLE, DHULLA TOLE, SALKHA TOLE, CHALAKHU TOLE, DUGAHITI TOLE
and SUNTOLE.Sankhu is economically poor town. The people of sankhu work in
trading, farming and organizing businesses. We can
see so many cultural fests and
festivals in sankhu. Sankhu is surrounded by beautiful hills with evergreen
jungles.
