Sankhu (Oldest town)

Introduction:
Sankhu (Shankharapur) is one of the oldest typical NewariVillage of Kathmandu district. According to the ancient book (Manisaili Mahabadan) It was formed at 1801 Kaligat Sambat KS (700 years earlier that Roman mythology). It is spread around five VDC’s (Pukhulachhi, Suntole, Bajrayogini, Lapsephedi, Indrayani). The population of Sankhu is around twenty two thousand. It is 17 km east-north far from the kathamandu city, situated at the altitude of 1328 meters from the sea level. Sankhu is surrounded by Manichod Mountain from north and east while Nagarkot, Changu Narayan and Boudha Nath are the nearest world famous destination from sankhu. Sankhu holds lot of temples, imaged, cultures, traditional dances, great model of wood carvings, jungles and mountain for hiking and safari, religion harmony. The place is rich in both natural landscape and cultural aspect with abundance of beauty, antique and mesmerizing tourism probability.


Core keys of sankhu:
The name Sankhu is originally derived from newari word “Sakwo De” which means next to Tibet. In Ancient time it was the main way to make trading and economic transaction form Kathmandu and other business regions.

A beautiful and artistic city located on the bank of Shanli Nadi river. Shalinadi river is one of the holy river of Hindu religion. It is related with goddess Swosthani from Skanda Puran (one of the 18 purans) is one of the most known the Hindus in all over the world. It has the main significance as the god “ Madhav Narayan” as well.

Bajryogini Temple is one of the great model of statue and historical shrine of the Nepal. It is just 3 km north from the valley of sankhu. This temple is actually a sort of temple complex, with the main temple having being built by King Pratap Malla in 1655 BS. Bajrayogini is the Hindu goddess of wisdom of which Ugra Tara is the Buddhist equivalent. Thus the temple is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists and must be treated with the utmost respect.
